Special Interests
In addition to my interest in using my positions to promote Britain's high-tech sector, especially SMEs, and my passion for cloud computing technologies, I have three principal special interest areas:
Green Technology: I am an advocate for both energy-efficient / green technology (eg. cloud computing) and ICT as a key part of the solution to climate change. I am the only representitive from a high-tech SME on the ministerial Green Economy Council, chair Intellect UK's climate change group and am the external communications officer of BCS's Data Centre Specialist Group. I am currently doing a collaborative PhD investigating the energy efficiency of network-delivered (cloud) IT services.
Girls into technology: The UK's high-tech sector is one of the few that promises to not only to be a new engine of growth for UK PLC, but also help combat climate change. Today, only 11% of ICT professionals in the industry are female, and falling. As one of the few female technology entrepreneurs in Britain I am an outspoken advocate for getting more girls interested in science & technology at school, and for improving the syllabus.
Improved care for the transgendered: I am one of the the lucky few late-transitioning transexual women who could afford proper treatment and therefore look normal and am thus able to lead a full life. I recently told my story in the papers (Sunday Times, Financial Times, The Independant) and on BBC radio in the hope of challenging preconceptions about the transgendered. I support GIRES (the Gender Identity Reserch and Education Society), with the specific aim of helping improve medical care for transexual people in the UK, especially transsexual children.
